Refused credit (Bristol)

I was refused credit when trying to set up a pay monthly plan at a mobilephone company and a week after when I applied for a credit card. I wasn't given any additional explanation why this happened. I would like to add that I have been in the UK for 10 months now, never had any kind of credit before, and I always paid my bills on time.
I also tried creating an account on Experian as the bank advised me, but I could get my account set up, because they don't accept non UK adresses in their registration form.

Has anyone experienced similiar issues when applying for credit?
If so, how did you manage to solve it?
