Brits Buying Cars in Belgium (Brussels)

Hi All
Have just taken a job in Belgium and am thinking of buying a car here. Can anyone let me know clearly as to whether I need to register / get residency status or can I just buy one on the grounds that I'm from a EU country? I'm British and getting conflicting reports as to the rules.
