Is a DNI necessary? CDI good enough? (Buenos Aires)

Hello fellow community members!

I was wondering if anyone could explain to me exactly what the use and advantage is to having a DNI in Argentina. Is it necessary to buy property, to open a bank account, to pay taxes, in general to live and work in Argentina?

Is it true that with a foreigners identification number, a CDI you can get a CUIT and do many of the same things?
