Desert Camping near Cairo

Has anyone gone desert camping before? We have done guided trips, but we have an SUV, and would like to take our own vehicle on a trip- ideally with some other vehicles for safety and company. We are looking at going in early February- would be interested to meet up with someone who has done it un-guided before, or anyone who might be interested in going in Feb, with own vehicle.
