Phone Calls and Money (Cairo)

Hi all,

Protected content have an iPhone 5s and i'm wondering how you can communicate in Egypt with people in the US/ or your home country which might be similar. I've heard about getting a sim card before hand or getting a service plan/cheap phone on arrival at the airport.

Protected content , what is the best way to travel money-wise? Are major credit cards accepted in major cities? I was thinknig about getting travellers checks before I leave and then xchanging them in each major city I go to (cairo/luxor/alexandria) so I only have enough cash per city in case I lose money/it gets stolen.
