Tourist Visa Extension Problems? (Cairo)

Has anyone (recently-- since the false alarm about having to get visas in advance back in March) had any trouble renewing/extending 30 day tourist visas or leaving the country on expired visas (more than just paying the penalty)? I came planning to go to the Mogamma to get an extension but I'm hearing groanings that they are tightening up on visas. If this is true, has anyone had any trouble border hopping?
