are a battleground for colliding views of secularism and religion. Yet these
battles mask the real stakes: the space that citizens, notably women and
minorities, are entitled to in a democracy. Can pluralism trump populist belief
in a “clash of civilizations?”

Dr. Amyn B. Sajoo is Scholar-in-Residence at Simon Fraser University’s Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and
