Learn What It's Like to Live on the Canary Islands
Located off the coast of Morocco, the Canary Islands are one of Spain's autonomous communities and are comprised of several volcanic islands, of which Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura are the largest and most densely populated. The sub-tropical climate attracts vacationers and new residents from across the globe. Tourism is the islands' main source of income, with 12 million visitors descending every year, and as the season is not limited to summer, there are opportunities for employment all year round. Small wonder the islands are so popular when they boast the amazing sand dunes of Maspalomas in Gran Canaria and the stunning Mount Teide National Park on Tenerife. As with mainland Spain, football is a national obsession, while Fuerteventura is the place to go for windsurfing enthusiasts — it even hosts the Windsurfing and Kiteboarding World Cup.
