In response to the thread about living in Bo Kaap. I have lived there myself for years and I didn't find that the locals were closed. I found that because there are no big gardens and fences, it was indeed a very friendly neighbourhood. Of course the culture is very different but also very fascininating for expats. In terms of safety, I guess it's not safe to walk at night in the centre of town anyway but I never had any break in in 8 years.
