Just Move to Chicago from Abroad

We are a family of 4 (husband, boy of 6 years old and a black Labrador) just moved from India to Chicago. My husband is German, I am French/Vietnamese. We lived 15 years abroad, quite a long time in Asia and now it's the first time to be in America. We are hesitating between moving to suburbs (Evanston, Wilmette) or staying in town (Lakeview, Lincoln park..), I heard that school are better in the suburbs. You will always have pros and cons living in the city or the suburbs, but as a multi/culti family what would be the most valuable place to live. Can anyone, give their objective point of view about social life/activity/school/houses for a family with kids, where you can have the most in the city or suburbs of Chicago?
