Moving to Chicago from the U.K.

Hi, My family and I are considering moving to Chicago next year.
We have 2 children currently aged 7 and 6 and our priority is their happiness and education. I have absolutely no idea about the education system in the U.S and would appreciate any feedback.
We are hoping to come over for a holiday later this year with the intention of visiting a selection of potential schools and would be delighted to hear any recommendations on public or private/ independent schools in and around Chicago.
In addition, we would very much appreciate any information about suitable areas in which to live.
