moving to chicago - jobs?! housing?! (Chicago)

Hey just wondering if any native Chicagoans had advice for me, because I am about to graduate with a Master's in International Relations and have always wanted to live in Chicago. I am from St. Louis, and just wanted to know what areas are both cheap and safe to live in (looking for apartment) and what kinds of jobs I could use my degree in? Thanks!
