Safe areas to live in Chicago

Hi everyone, I wonder if I could ask for some advice please. I am considering doing a course in Chicago for 3 months. I currently live in Ireland and would like to ask if anyone could suggest safe areas to live which are around 30 mins walking distance to merchandise mart.

I've done quite a bit of research on this course and to do really well I need to be able to be within walking distance of merchandise mart where the course is being held to be able to work with other team members if there are short deadlines for projects.

I have budgeted around $ Protected content per month (for a furnished room) for rent but maybe this would be too low if I was living right in the city? I've looked into places too live there but it would be great to get some advice.

Or, I would consider taking a train or bus but would like to ask if it is would be safe to travel on your own late at night?

Are there any particular areas which really should be avoided?

Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.
