Shanghai Daily

During your expat adventure in China, one of the most important things is to keep up with the news from your new home country. After all, part of being an expat is fully being immersed in a new environment! Newspapers and other relevant media should be daily companions of any expat.

Launched on 1 October, 1999, Shanghai Daily is the first local English-language daily newspaper on the Chinese mainland and is the primary source of information for English readers in Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta Region. Shanghai Daily is available in print, online, and as iPad/iPhone/Android/Blackberry/Playbook apps. It also owns a separate lifestyle website, iDEALShanghai.com.

The expat population in Shanghai has reached 200,000 and keeps growing. For them, Shanghai Daily is the only official English-language newspaper in the city that provides a timely coverage of local news, an insightful digest of government policies, and useful guides of living in Shanghai. With a circulation of around 100,000 copies a day and a similar number of daily online page views, the Shanghai Daily’s main audience and target group are young and middle-aged professionals and senior corporate executives with a good education and a high income.

According to Shanghai Daily’s own research, 80 percent of readers are aged between 20 and 45 years. More than 95 percent of them graduated from universities and about 67 percent of them have a monthly income of over 20,000 CYN. Also, around 75 percent of readers travel more than five times a year.

The printed paper is distributed to homes, offices, hotels, airports, consulates and government organizations in and around Shanghai. Shanghai Daily also has a strong presence in both Chinese and foreign social media including Sina Weibo, WeChat, Twitter, and Facebook. Apart from providing selected daily news, these social media platforms are used for a more casual and interactive approach and include publications on lifestyle information such as dining, shopping, and hot events in the city.

With a strong team of Chinese and foreign editors and reporters who are dedicated journalists by training as well as the aforementioned presence in all kinds of media, including newspaper, mobile devices, and social media, Shanghai Daily provides their readers with timely and extensive news coverage, in-depth reporting, insightful analysis, and useful information, helping them to better understand Shanghai and China.
