Exporting to Sri Lanka (Colombo)

I have recently joined InterNations, Colombo.

Myself and my husband are nearing completion of a villa build in Hikkaduwa. For at least 5 years it will be our holiday home only, but we do intend to take up part residence in Sri Lanka after that.

The problem that we have is that we wish to import household goods and furniture and have been given conflicting advice about what the regulations say. Some say we need a residence visa valid for 1 year, but I am concerned because we will not be in residence and that may create other problems for us.

I have also been told without a visa we are liable for 100% tax and duties, on top of the cost of shipping.Is that correct, do you know? If so, are there any ways around this onerous position?

We hope that a get together will be arranged while we are over for 3 weeks from 15th August
