New to Africa, HELLLLP! (Dar es Salaam)

Hi there, I am hoping to be accepted for a job in Morogoro in the next 24 hours and if I am successful I may be moving to Tanzania within the next 2 weeks. I currently live in South Eastern Ireland and have never been farther away from home than Turkey.

So here is my question. WIll I need to buy a gun in Tanzania for personal protection from muggers, bandits etc? I know in Johannesburg it is almost a prerequisite before entering the city.

Also, what is the most essential pieces of gear that I should pack inmy suitcase in your experienced opinion?
