Security issues, how bad? (Dar es Salaam)

Hi Community,

we are in the process of committing for a move to Dar. I have been researching countless website regarding security issues in Dar. It all sounds quite scary, not being able to walk around after dark, getting mugged during daylight for running shoes, corrupt police and roaming bandits in the bush.

I wonder how it is to live there, can I just go running during the day form house door (hopefully Oysterbay)? I am a Triathlete, so I also like to go cycling (On or Offroad) for extended periods, will they steel my bike? How do you guys feel about security there in your day to day life? Can you move around freely? Is it legally possible for expats to obtain a licensed fire arm for home protection?
