Border Run (Dubai)

Trying to figure out the best way to get a visa stamp besides flying to Oman which I have done and also going to Oman via RAK which I prefer not to do.
I've read some old threads on here about Hatta but I don't think you can get a stamp driving that way and back, correct? Does anyone know if this is still possible to Hatta and back?
Or maybe Al Ain is a better option?
Also if you have rental car that is supposed to not cross the border, how does that work? Can you still just pay car insurance to go across?
