Driving to Oman for Xmas (Dubai)

Please, can anyone give advice about driving to Oman? We are leaving Friday for a few days to celebrate Christmas, hotel reservations made already.... I have a Resident visa and my boyfriend is visiting on a tourist visa. Whats the cost for exit and entry, etc? We will go via Al Ain as we're told its a more beautiful drive. Anyone have comments, suggestions or guidance? Many thanks!!!!
