Hatta border run... (Dubai)

Can someone tell me, when you leave the UAE at Hatta can you walk through the border crossing proceedings... I.e, walk into Oman and back? And, do you really enter Oman, or just circle the UAE immigration building for the stamp?
I have a motorcycle I want to leave at the border so I dont have to hassle with the paperwork for the motorcycle. Many thanks! (How long is the drive to Hatta?)
