Where is the desert ? (Dubai)

This certainly sounds like a stupid question but I've been in and out of Dubai since I 'moved' here some months ago and I haven't seen the desert.
I'm not interested in going on any sand buggy, just to see and walk in some big sand dunes.
Can anyone recommend where one would drive to (not too far - taxi distance).
