In our InterNations Recommended Blog section we let you take the spotlight! Expat life in general is, of course, a perfect breeding ground for great, user-generated reads, and life in Dubai makes no exception. Take your time and browse the great blogs showcased in this article!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Who you are, where you come from, when you moved to Dubai, etc.

Malaysian Chinese and have lived in Auckland for many years before moving to Dubai. We were in London when my other half got a job here. Glad that we moved here - coming to two years now :)

When and why did you decide to start blogging about your experiences?

I started blogging as a way to keep in touch with family, then it sort of morphed into a way to thank restaurant, spas, and all the many bars that we've gone to. We found hospitability amazing here, and it felt right to write a little as a means to express our gratitude to those who makes Dubai, Dubai.

Do you have any favorite blog entries of yours?

Maybe this one? Above the Clouds. I try and keep my blog as "unpersonal" as possible, but every now and then I'll do a little "Random ramble", hehe.

Tell us about the ways your new life in Dubai differs from that back home. Did you have trouble getting used to the new circumstances? Did you experience culture shock?

Ah, Dubai is nothing like Auckland. Everything was just 'wow' at the beginning and it is still so, now. Not too much of a culture shock to be honest, we just love it here!

Do you think you were fully prepared for what awaited you in Dubai? If you could, would you change some decisions/preparations you made?

Hmm, not really ay. We never planned to move here. It just kind of came to us so quickly and next thing we know we were in Dubai, with not a single summer clothing in our luggage (cause we were planning to move to London).

Every expat knows that expat life comes with some hilarious anecdotes and funny experiences. Care to share one with us?

Haha, tough one. I travelled in the UK with just one pair of boots for 3 months. When I moved here it was April and WARM. First thing I did was go to Carrefour and bought myself a 10 aed flip flop. So happy to have my toes breath again!

Which three tips would you like to give future expats before they embark on their new life in Dubai?

  • Expect to be blown away by everything.
  • You're going to be very, very hot.
  • Just try and enjoy what Dubai has to offer. It may not have what you are used to at home, but it has so many other things that you may not get back home. So, focus on that. And you'll love it.

How is the expat community in Dubai? Did you have a hard time finding like-minded people or fellow expats?

Found our first group of friends through a forum. It wasn't hard :)

How would you summarize your expat life in Dubai in a single, catchy sentence?

Just enjoy getting spoilt, in Dubai :)

Peter B. Krehmer

"There are so many expats in the UAE, but the InterNations Dubai Ramadan dinners brought some wonderful guests together. "

Suzanne Payne

"Dubai is such an overwhelming mixture of tradition and modernity that I was very grateful for all the support from other expats. "
