is it safe?... (Durban)

Hi there!
So i have a great internship opportunity in Durban next Febuary. I've been Googling a bit about Durban and surrounding area to get some more information. There is still 1 question that keeps arising; is it safe?

I red things like if you take a wrong turn on the highway of Johannesburg, you are likely to be robbed, and stories about tourists getting robbed and killed because they were not careful enough. I probably only visited the gloom-and-doom websites, and that is why would like some info from people that actually live here!

(Note: i know that internet tends to exaggerate alot, and reading stuff about certain places does not mean it is like this everywhere).
