men interaction with women (Khobar (Eastern Prov.))

I am wondering just what is allowed in the different environments here in Al Khobar. I know what the guide books say and that women and men are essentially separated in public unless they are married. But what about simple face to face conversations between an unmarried male and female expat in public, are the compounds safe for interaction socializing, what happens if you share a taxi for example.
Appreciate any advice before I get in trouble!
