Cindy: A.k.a. Chymecindy
Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Who you are, where you come from, when you moved to Finland, etc.
Hello! My name is Cindy Henriksson. I am a mother of a two year old girl. I am from the Philippines. I moved to Finland in January 2011.
When and why did you decide to start blogging about your experiences?
I started blogging about my life in Finland on the day I arrived here. I blog every day about my daily experiences and share some photos as well. It was my private blog though; I decided to make another one which is this blog, so I could share more topics including parenting and lifestyle.
Do you have any favorite blog entries of yours?
Tell us about the ways your new life in Finland differs from that back home. Did you have trouble getting used to the new circumstances? Did you experience culture shock?
I definitely experienced culture shock the first time I arrived here. It’s just so different from where I came from. So quiet here and for me so hard to find friends because of the language. As time and years passes by I got used to it and actually like being here.
Do you think you were fully prepared for what awaited you in Finland? If you could, would you change some decisions/preparations you made?
I honestly didn’t know anything about Finland until I arrived here. I was here as tourist first and then I tried to apply for a residence permit a few weeks later. I got so lucky it got approved. I then decided to stay here to stay with my husband and family. If I could change anything, it would be doing some research first about the country and the people. And also learn at least the basic language.
Every expat knows that expat life comes with some hilarious anecdotes and funny experiences. Care to share one with us?
Too many to share, sorry cannot remember :)
Which three tips would you like to give future expats before they embark on their new life in Finland?
- Do a lot of research first. Learn more about Finland, its culture, weather and the people.
- Learn the language, at least a few basic words.
- Prepare for the worst.
How is the expat community in Finland? Did you have a hard time finding like-minded people or fellow expats?
I honestly did not participate in any expat activities in Finland. Except the Filipino expat activities, of course!
How would you summarize your expat life in Finland in a single, catchy sentence?
It’s hard, but it’s fun and worth it.
