Work visa VS Blue Card (Frankfurt)

I am currently awaiting a job offer for Frankfurt with my current company in the US. They provided me some visa and blue card information which did not seem to match what the German Embassy site stated. My job was stating that should get a blue card and the cost is 5,000 to 6,000 Euro - looking at the Embassy site it does not look like I need the blue card and the regular resident/work visa fee is much less.

Does anyone have any experience in moving from the US to Germany and advice about types of visas and fees? I want to take this job but I am suddenly very concerned about total moving cost.
