The ASK Social Skills Group is an inclusive after school program designed to help children and adolescents, who regularly struggle with social interactions and situations, develop the skills they need in order to improve their ability to relate to others.

This program is open to any child or adolescent who has difficulty with or needs to develop the following;

conversational skills
cooperative/joint play skills
ability to manage friendships
ability to manage their emotions
Mandatory Pre-Assessment
Prior to joining the group, one private family session is required with one of the therapists/facilitators of the program. The purpose of this 60 minute session is to gain a better understanding of the child and in particular the social skills he or she needs to work on. It will be divided into a 30 minute meeting with the parents and a 30 minute meeting with the child. The information gathered from this session will allow the program facilitators to determine which group the child would be best suited to in order for their needs to be addressed during the course of the skill building activities.

Based on parent and therapist’s assessments, each group will be tailored to meet the specific needs of the children within that particular group.

A typical group session will include a portion of time devoted to peer socialization. Through the use of games and activities the participants of the group will be encouraged to relate to one another informally. Each session will also include a portion of time devoted specifically to teaching and practicing the previously identified target skills. Parents and guardians can expect to have regular individual feedback throughout the 10 weeks regarding their child’s progress towards their goals.

Communication and liaison with school and/or other therapists is also possible at the parents’ request. In order to make sure that the Program addresses the specific needs of group members, there will be two groups of 8 children (max) run simultaneously. Each group will be facilitated by a Psychologist with two assistants.
