Potential Move to Guyana (Georgetown)

I am looking to move to Georgetown for work and I have recently seen some warnings about the safety there. My girlfriend and I are a little concerned about this. I have worked and traveled around the world and am aware that there are risks everywhere, but reading that strong level of warnings from Canadian and UK government sites, I am wondering what people who are living there think.

We live in Nassau where there is some crime, but it doesn't seem as strong. IS a gated community required? Are there better areas?

Hoping that some of the people that are living there can help us out. We are keen to move to a new place. The job opportunity is good. We don't want to move to a place that isn't safe, though.
