Bank accounts (Glasgow)

Hello - I'm new to Glasgow, on assignment from America for a year. I need to open a local bank account, but I think to open most checking accounts you have to be a UK resident for at least 2 years. What could I do? My main goal is to get a Visa debit card with a chip so it's easier to access ATM's around here. My debit card from the US is a "sliding" type of debit card, not with a chip (I use TD Bank). I was chatting with RBS this morning but I don't think they really have any solutions to help me. Any suggestions you may have would be welcome.

Other than that, I'm enjoying Glasgow so far! It's a beautiful place with lots to see and I'm looking forward to checking out some other UK & Europe places while I'm here.
