CHINESE IN SINGAPORE

If you want to relocate from Hong Kong to Singapore, you are not alone. Although Hong Kong’s population earns ten percent more than Singapore’s, many HK residents are relocating to the Lion City for a better quality of life.

While Hong Kong has long been a business epicenter of Asia, Singapore is fast-becoming the new trading capital and attracting thousands of expats. Laws in Singapore are notoriously strict, but those moving from Hong Kong will, by comparison, enjoy a more relaxed, less-polluted lifestyle. The cost of living is also cheaper in Singapore, with lower rent and everyday expenses. However, healthcare and education are still relatively costly in both cities.

Visas and Work Permits

One big benefit of moving to Singapore is that once you have a work permit, you can immediately apply for permanent residency. Singapore has various work permits available to expats. The type of work permit you can apply for is dependent on your monthly salary. If you are working for a company that is overseas, a Singapore-based organization will still need to sponsor you.

Although Singapore is still considered one of the most expensive cities in the world, residents moving from Hong Kong will find housing costs reasonable. Rental prices range from 2,800 USD for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center to 7,000 USD for a three-bedroom place in the same area. Cheaper government housing is available, but these can be difficult to secure as a foreigner as they are largely reserved for Singaporean residents only.

Hong Kong residents looking for a lifestyle that is similar to their own yet cheaper, cleaner, and more relaxed, should look no further than Singapore. As one of the Four Asian Tigers, Singapore mirrors Hong Kong’s quality of life, but at a lower cost. In addition to the typical high salary found in Singapore, residents also enjoy lower income taxes, making the ultra-modern island nation feel even more affordable by comparison.

Whether you are moving to Singapore for work or pleasure, expats are sure to find an easy home in the city-state.

Are you planning to relocate internationally? If you’ve never moved abroad, the process will be overwhelming. If you have, you know the challenges that lie ahead. Whatever stage you’re at, InterNations can help you with comprehensive guides and a community of experienced expats who are happy to help and share their knowledge.

Housing

When importing household goods into Singapore, customs regulations are fairly standard. Items used for business are subject to a Goods and Services Tax. Personal items should not be taxed. Pets can also be brought to Singapore easily, but be sure you have the required paperwork at least 30 days prior to your move.

I was able to connect with other expats in Zurich who enjoy cycling as much as I do and organize weekly rides.
