CANADIANS IN THE US

The cost of living, which includes things like private school, healthcare, higher education, and even average rent prices, is higher in the US than in Canada. Nevertheless, thousands of Canadians choose to move south each year. As a Canadian citizen, you will require sponsorship to move the US, whether it be from an employer petitioning on your behalf, or a family member who is already a US citizen.

Visas and Work Permits

Canadian professionals seeking to relocate to the US for work-related purposes will require an employer to sponsor and petition for them. While a visa exists for Canadian professionals who fall under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that successfully apply for one, it is not needed for a Canadian citizen to work in the country. The only time it is mandatory is when they wish to bring accompanying family members.

Many Canadian expats who move to the US test out the waters by renting short-term before committing to a long-term rental or purchasing property. If you do wish to become a homeowner in the US right away, it is surprisingly easy for Canadians to do so. For example, your Canadian credit history is usually acceptable if you are looking to qualify for a mortgage.

Despite the US and Canada being neighboring countries, moving from Canada to the US is still a major undertaking. Relocating, even if it just across the border, is anything but simple, especially in this political day and age. So whether you are in need of financial advice to successfully apply for a US mortgage, or seeking the assistance of a tax advisor to help you navigate the foreign tax system, there is plenty you will need to prepare as a Canadian seeking to relocate down south.

Are you planning to relocate internationally? If you’ve never moved abroad, the process will be overwhelming. If you have, you know the challenges that lie ahead. Whatever stage you’re at, InterNations can help you with comprehensive guides and a community of experienced expats who are happy to help and share their knowledge.

Housing

Good news for Canadians seeking to relocate to the US: the US waives duty or imposes reduced fees for items grown, manufactured, or produced in the Great White North. Household goods and personal effects will be allowed to enter duty-free provided they have been in your possession for at least one year. If you are moving with dogs or cats older than three months, you will be required to provide proof of a rabies vaccination and a certificate from a veterinarian proving that your pet is in good health.

Relocating

Moving from Canada to the US

Whether you are a highly-skilled Canadian worker being transferred to the US for an international assignment or joining a US family member, there are many reasons why Canadians choose to relocate to the US each year.

I was able to connect with other expats in Zurich who enjoy cycling as much as I do and organize weekly rides.
