Safe route to Guadalajara

I will be driving to Guadalajara from Indianapolis Indiana USA with my 2 little girls and my sister in law. We will be meeting my husband there. He is flying from Malaysia. We will be living there for about a year or 2. Everyone says I'm crazy for driving there with my girls. I would really appreciate any advice I can get.
