visiting Guangzhou

I have to go to the US Embassy to get some extra visa pages added to my passport come July. I am wondering if anyone here knows how far in advance does one have to make the appointment with the embassy. How many days should I plan to stay in Guangzhou for and if there are any decent hotels around the embassy for around Protected content per night.
