Is Guatemala safe? (Guatemala City)

I am coming into town at the end of July. I need some expats to show me around. I have hooked up with a RE Agent who is showing me places in Panajachel. I just read a post from someone who said she rarely goes out due to being robbed multiple times. I am not sure where she lives. I guess just like other places, it depends on where you live. If she lives in Guatemala City, I guess I can see why. But, how about other areas. I am thinking of moving but is this somewhat safe? Of course no place is 100% safe, but can I live a decent life and not be in fear all the time?
