Buying a Used Car (Guayaquil)

We have found a good used car here in Guayaquil and now we're concerned about the legal aspects of a private sale. Then there's the registration, insurance and such to consider.

We've read about having an attorney draw up a sales contract or maybe a standard form provided by an attorney. Then having the signed contract, color copies of buyer/seller cedulas and color copy of the matricula notarized. Also be sure the SOAT, or car insurance is up to date.

Does anyone have any advice on the legal aspects of buying a used car in a private sale in Ecuador? Any ideas on the safest method to make the payment...ie, local or international bank transfer, wire transfer, check or just cash? Any recommendations on reputable lawyers in Guayaquil, who speak English?
