Ecuador vist in Aug (Guayaquil)

Hi Guys,
I'm visiting Ecuador in Aug with my girlfriend, looking to stay around 3 months in all.
Basic plan is to visit costal area's (she loves the beach), Esmeraldas first & then traveling down through Manabi & Guayas.
We are not looking for big city’s but rather smaller towns with enough amenities, bars/restaurants & goings on not to be boring.
We plan on finding a nice spot and then looking for a long term rental for around 2 months.
If anyone can recommend certain places fitting the criteria or of course certain places that should be avoided I would be very grateful & also any addional advice for the trip would always be a bonus & appreciated.
