Security situation in Haiti

Dear all,
I have the opportunity to work in Haiti next year but I am still unsure because the security threats...I would be living close to the Montana Hotel and work for an NGO. I would come with my cat :-) so I was wondering how to really assess the security situation. I have heard many different things but I can't still really grasb how you feel on the ground...is it easy to get out of PAP? Is it safe to travel the country with friends? Are you scared at night to be assaulted? How does the population perceive you?

Would love to get your views and perceptions, it would really help me decide!
