An unusual approach to assimilation! (Heidelberg)

Hello, I wanted to invite members to a performance in Mannheim I'm doing called Mund-Stück (Mouth Piece) with my friend Rita Pauls, from Argentina. It’s a kind of experiment in assimilation, where we learnt a lot of German in an unusual way (not previously speaking the language). We went random-hitch-hiking in Germany last summer, recording people’s answers to the question What Do You Think Needs to be Said? We learnt the answers by heart with stutterings and thinking time, and now perform the text back to Germany. It’s a simple premise with complex results, at times funny, at times I think quite confronting in a good way.

Liebes (sehr geehrtes?) Deutschland,

Können wir uns jetzt duzen?
Letzten Sommer hast du uns absorbiert,
und wir haben dich absorbiert.
So haben wir jetzt eine Menge von dir in uns.
Wir haben dein Zentrum gefunden,
wo die Nadel fällt.
Es war ein Feld mit Blick auf sanfte Hügel.
Von dort aus fuhren wir per Anhalter eine Woche lang,
willkürlich, wahllos,
Daumen raus,
ohne zu wissen, wo wir jede Nacht landen würden.
Zu Fuß, mit dem Fahrrad, in deinen Audis, Skodas, Mercedes, alten Lastwagen, sind wir durch deine Hitzewelle-Landschaften, durch deine Geständnisse, Ansprüche und Sorgen gezogen.
Wir haben am Ende viele von deinen Stimmen aufgenommen,
wie sie, manchmal freundlich, manchmal zornig, versucht haben,
unsere Frage zu beantworten:
"Was müsste Ihre Meinung nach mal gesagt werden?"

Wir haben diese Aufnahmen bearbeitet,
und während des letzten halben Jahres auswendig gelernt,
um Deutsch zu lernen;
wir haben auch deine Momente des Schweigens und die anderen kleinen Geräusche, die du beim Denken-Sprechen machst gelernt.
So haben wir jetzt eine Menge von dir in uns. Einiges davon sitzt bequem in uns, anderes weniger.
Ab dem 14. Februar kommt es alles wieder raus, in dem wir deine Atemzüge und Worte an dich wiedergeben,
in Aufführungen von Mund-Stück auf Bühnen
in Leipzig, Mannheim, Berlin, München, Stuttgart, Bremen und, wir hoffen, in anderen Städten auch.

dear Germany
Last summer you absorbed us, and we absorbed you.
So we have a lot of you inside us now.
We found your very centre, where the pin drops.
It was a field with a view of rolling hills.
From there we walked
to a place called Walkes
and began hitch-hiking for a week,
randomly
thumbs out
no clue where we’d end up each night.
On foot, bikes, in your Audis, Skodas, Mercs, old trucks,
we passed through your heat-waving landscapes and into your convictions, aspirations and exasperations.
We ended up recording many of you
as you kindly or furiously attempted to answer our question,
“What in your opinion needs to be said?”

We made an edit of those recordings, and over the past half year,
we’ve learnt it by heart, as a way to learn German.
We also learnt your silences, and the other little sounds you make, or manage not to make, while thinking-speaking.
So we have a lot of you inside us now. Some of that sits comfortably within us, others less so.
Starting February 14th, it’ll all be coming back out
as we re-breathe your breaths and re-speak your words,
in performances of Mund-Stück on stages
in Leipzig, Mannheim, Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Bremen and, we hope, other cities to follow.
