Legal Counsel Needed (Hong Kong)

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) is a statutory body charged with the mandate to eliminate discrimination on the grounds of sex, marital status, pregnancy, disability, family status and race, as well as to eliminate sexual harassment, and harassment and vilification on the ground of disability and race. The EOC promotes equality of opportunities between men and women, between persons with and without a disability, persons of different races and irrespective of family status. It is the EOC’s vision to create a pluralistic and inclusive society free of discrimination where there is no barrier to equal opportunities. The following position now exists in the Legal Service Division and applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates:

Legal Counsel
(Three-year renewable contract, basic monthly salary from HK$49,355 to HK$80,080, cash allowance and gratuity payable in accordance with the Commission’s policy)

The Role
To provide legal advice to the EOC and its Office
To provide legal assistance and representation to aggrieved persons in proceedings, including conducting cases in court, under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance, the Disability Discrimination Ordinance, the Family Status Discrimination Ordinance, and the Race Discrimination Ordinance
To undertake research and review of legal, procedural and policy matters and perform related functions, such as drafting of appropriate forms, notices and other documents
To conduct or contribute to training or other projects undertaken by EOC
To perform other duties as assigned
The Person
Solicitors admitted in a recognized jurisdiction as stipulated under section 2A and Schedule 2 of the Legal Officers Ordinance with at least 3 years of professional experience; or Barristers in a recognized jurisdiction as stipulated under section 2A and Schedule 2 of the Legal Officers Ordinance with at least 4 years’ professional experience
Preference will be given to candidates with good understanding of anti-discrimination law and issues of equal opportunities
Flexible and adaptive to changes, team player with good analytical and interpersonal skills, computer-literate
Motivated and committed to EOC’s vision, mission and values
Have a good command of both Chinese and English
