Pedestrian friendly Residential Area (Houston)

Dear all,
My family will have to stay in Houston for a few months due to health reasons.
Would you please advise on nice areas to look for appartment buildings, at walking distance from shops / restaurants / entretainment?

I know Houston is not a particularly pedestrian friendly city, but there must be some areas that are nicest than others.

Last time, we stayed near the Medical Center and there were barely sidewalks on the streets. Not even jogger friendly...
