Suggestions for a newly returning expatriate (Houston)

US born expatriate, who spent nearly 8 years abroad in Vietnam and Singapore, originally from Boston, but will be relocating to Houston. I welcome feedback on areas on reasonably priced, safe, family oriented areas to live, as we have a 5 year old. We'll have a car but would like access to public transportation, preferably trains if possble. We're looking for a 6 month furnished rental, but plan to buy.
