6 month residency permit for tourists (Istanbul)

Hi everyone,

Sorry to start a new thread on this topic but there is so much conflicting info so I'm confused!

I'm an American citizen and arrived in Istanbul on February 1st. I have a 3 month tourist visa but I need to extend it for an extra 1.5 months. Do I need to apply for a 6 month residency permit for tourists? If so, what documents do I need to bring to the local police? Do I need to do this within 30 days of arriving?
