Holiday in Turkey? (Istanbul)

Despite the current political climate in Istanbul, I am interested in spending a week in Turkey in September. Would anyone advise against this? And if not, do you have any recommendations for "must do" activities? It is for my husband's 30th birthday, so we are looking for some adventurous things to do... we are intrepid travellers :)
