Istanbul’s historical peninsula is an UNESCO World Heritage Site since Protected content has been an important witness to world history. It is the heart of ancient Istanbul & it was ruled by four major empires from this point. As you can guess, there are many historic places on the peninsula such as mosques, churches, palaces and even more of which only traces remain.

*HAGIA SOPHIA MUSEUM
Hagia Sophia was built as a cathedral in Protected content converted to a mosque after the conquest of Istanbul by the Ottomans. It was secularized in Protected content reopened as a museum.
Hagia Sophia is mostly known as one of the most valuable and fascinating structures in the world of art and architecture. It deserves to enter to the collection of the rare works by challenging to the time. It is located in Sultanahmet area (a historic place), nearby of Topkapi palace in Istanbul Turkey. Hagia Sophia is a great architectural beauty and an important monument both for Byzantine and for Ottoman Empires. Once a church, later a mosque, and now a museum at the Turkish Republic, Hagia Sophia has always been the valuable of its time.This church was rebuilt three times on the same place. Megale ekklesia meaning big church was named firstly but then it was renamed as Hagia Sophia meaning Holy Wisdom.
*HAGIA IRENE
Right after the Hagia Sophia, St.Irene is the second largest and oldest church from the Byzantine era still standing in Istanbul.
The 4th century St. Eirene Church, also known as Hagia Eirene Church or St. Irene's Church is located in the 1st court of the Topkapi Palace on the Historical Peninsula in Istanbul. The St. Eirene Church is one of the oldest Byzantium churches in Istanbul.
Due to its extraordinary acoustics, it often plays host to a variety of concerts and cultural/artistic events.
*BLUE MOSQUE ( SULTAN AHMED MOSQUE )
The Blue Mosque ( Sultan Ahmed Mosque ) was built by Sedefkar Mehmet Aga in Sultan Ahmet I. era between ( Protected content ) years. It is located on the site of the Great Palace of Byzantium, on the southeastern side of the Hippodrome. It is called by Europeans as Blue because of its interior blue tiles which was used more than 20.000 pieces.
The mosque is also popularly known as a fascinating structure. It is only six minarets mosque in Turkey.
*OLD HIPPODROME SQUARE
Hippodrome Square was built by Septimius Severus to entertain the public at the beginning of second century, in Protected content . But it has rebuilt by Konstantin I. It is located in the Square of Blue Mosque. Hippodrome has witnessed many awesome events such as the famous gladiator fights, chariot/car races, many riots and bloody events in the past. Under the Hippodrome's location the horses, the elephants and the camels were kept by the Byzantines, while the wild animals were kept by the Romans in the cages. The deep hollows were dug to protect the people from attacks of these wild animals in front of the sitting sets. In this regard Hippodrome is derived from hippos and dromos; It means ''running''.
*BASILICA CISTERN (YEREBATAN SARNICLARI )
The grandest of the many underground water reservoirs in Istanbul is the ancient Basilica Cistern which can hold 27 million gallons of water! Built in 532AD by Byzantine Emperor Justinianus, the Cistern is an engineering marvel with the weight of the city above supported by a complex network of arches connecting its Protected content in a series of 12 rows.
*ISTANBUL ARCHAEOLOGY MUSEUM
It actually consists of three museums. Those are the main Archeology Museum, the Old Eastern Works Museum and the Enameled Kiosk Museum. It houses over one million objects that represent almost all of the eras and civilizations in world history. The extremely ornate Alexander Sarcophagus, once believed to be prepared for Alexander the Great, is among the most famous pieces of ancient art in the museum.
*BATH-HOUSE OF HASEKI HURREM SULTAN
The Haseki Hürrem Sultan Hamamı, is a sixteenth-century Turkish bath in Istanbul. It was commissioned by Roxelana, the consort of the Ottoman Emperor Sultan Suleiman I. ( Suleiman The Magnificent ). It was built by Mimar Sinan on the site of historical Baths of Zeuxippus for the religious community of the nearby Hagia Sophia.
