Watching Turkish TV to learn Turkish... (Istanbul)

How do you successfully learn Turkish through watching TV? I know a good bit of basic turkish and a decent amount of vocabulary but I need to improve it, preferably quickly for normal conversations with friends and whatnot.

Did you learn Turkish through watching TV and movies? How is it possible to learn if you only hear the same word time to time and in different contexts? Are you sitting there with your pen, paper and dictionary or just absorbing it and eventually through the scenes on the tv the words begin to click and you suddenly have any understanding of them?
