Hard to live in Izmir???

Hi,
I live in Japan. I'm coming to visit Turkey and I may want to stay and teach English. I've been told that Izmir is a hard city to live in because there are not a lot of expats or Turkish people who speak English.
Would love to hear opinions from people who actually live there. What do you think?
