Buying a car (Johannesburg)

Hi All,
I am moving to ZA at the beginning of October for a 2 yr postdoctoral fellowship at Wits. I will need a car for travelling around etc, but will not have access to a university vehicle most of the time, so was planning to get a used car of my own. However, I read on another blog that I cant buy/own a car without a permanent residents visa. As my PDF is only 2 years, I only have a long-term visitors visa. Can anyone tell me if its still possible to own a car under these circumstances?
