How has Joburg surprised you? (Johannesburg)

I'm motivated to start this thread after reading yet another article (and comments) from back home about how dangerous and terrible Joburg is for tourists and citizens.

For me the inner city re-generation has been a real surprise. How rapid and "effective" it has been. Empty office space has been converted to 50, Protected content . The Mandela and Tambo law office was a squatters camp in Protected content , now a great outdoor museum. The markets and spaces that have opened up rival any farmers market and outdoor venues back home. The views from the new rooftop bars in the CBD are fabulous.

My experience in this city has thus far been overwhelmingly positive - maybe I've just been lucky! What have others experienced/been surprised by - good and bad?
