Renting a car and buying furnitures? (Johannesburg)

My husband has a critical skill visa for SA and me and my 2 years old son will accompany him.our visa last for1 year and maybe extended if he finds a good job there.I am so confused if it is better to buy a car or rent one.please help me decide.
Another thing is that my budget is limited and I am looking for furniture and home appliances which are not that much expensive and also work properly .please guide me where can I buy better ones first hand or second hand.
