nepal bandh again? (Kathmandu)

My family in nepal says there have been bandhs for the past couple of weeks. I did not experience them last summer when we were there. Can anyone tell me how the bandhs disrupt your life? In what ways? I am a westerner considering a long stay in Kathmandu but sometimes feel discourage by these constant strikes and political unrest. Does the city feel safe?
